TREE-Lab researchers are staying healthy, doing as good as we can, and working on our research.
Some updates from our group to catch-up on: 1. Rohini was selected to attend the NAE's 2020 US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. Very grateful for this opportunity to meet and interact with so many talented scientists and researchers from various backgrounds. 2. Rohini chaired the 2nd AICHE Solar Energy Systems Conference this summer (Aug. 12 -- 14) along with co-chairs Nick Auyeung and Christopher Muhich, and organized by the Center for Energy Initiatives at the AIChE. The conference focused on the topics of solar-fuel generators, thermal energy storage, solar process heating, desalination and water treatment. Despite the transition from an in-person to a virtual event, the conference was very well received and turned out to be a very successful event. Thanks to the valuable support from the organizers at AIChE, steering committee members and all participants. 3. Mike, Bingjia, Zijie and Luisa from the TREE-Lab gave excellent oral presentations at the 2nd AICHE Solar Energy Systems Conference Mike, Rohini and several other researchers at the Mechanical Engineering department at UM discuss some specifics on how we have all adapted to the "new normal" to keep lab work going while conducting research in a safe and a responsible manner. Check out more information here.
Bingjia and Zijie, currently Masters students in TREE Lab, are both officially admitted to the ME PhD program at UM. Congrats! Look forward to advising you both in your PhD journey.
Rohini was invited to participate and present at the university panel at the 2nd Thermal-Mechanical-Chemical Electricity Storage Workshop that was held in Pittsburgh, PA. Was great to be back at this workshop that brings together researchers from academia, industry and national labs.
We are so happy to welcome Aditya Sundar, who is currently a 2nd year PhD student in Materials Science & Engineering, to our lab. Aditya will work on modeling corrosion mechanisms for high-temperature alloys in the presence of an oxidizing and carburizing environment. We are collaborators on the recently awarded ARPAE project led by Prof. Andre Benard at Michigan State University.
Welcome to TREE-Lab, Aditya! TREE Lab does a yearly Christmas cookie-exchange with all the group members. This year we had several tasty treats that were made from scratch by our team members. Was great fun to enjoy science with sweets and deserts as we wrap up this year.
It has been a wonderful past year. We are grateful for the new people that have joined our team and have exciting research to look forward to in the future years to come. Rohini gave an invited talk titled "Photocatalytic Particle Suspension Reactors for Solar Water Splitting" at the AICHE Solar Energy systems conference at Waco, TX.
Rohini attended and participated at the Workshop on Fundamental Needs for Dynamic and Interactive Thermal Storage Solutions for Buildings organized by LBNL and NREL at Berkeley. Was great to meet with experts in the field and learn about opportunities for thermal energy storage in building applications; also was wonderful to catch up with friends at the lab.
Rohini gave an invited special seminar at the Energy and Efficiency Institute at the University of California, Davis. Thanks Prof. Vinod Narayanan for hosting me and giving me a tour of the solar thermal energy testing facility at the STEEL Lab, UC Davis.
TREE Lab celebrates Halloween dressed up as characters from the Addams Family. Was great fun!
